Speech and Language Disorders

What is a speech and language disorder?

Speech and language disorders refer to problems in communicating and related areas such as oral-motor function – sucking, swallowing, drinking, and eating. These disorders or delays range from substituting one sound for another to understanding sounds to challenges with speech and feeding. Frequently, the cause of speech and language disorders is unknown. In some cases hearing loss, neurological disorders, brain injury, intellectual disability, and physical impairments such as cleft lip or palate may cause this type of challenge.
