Celebrating Life Through Service
This year Aspire volunteer Steve Motykiewicz is celebrating his one hundredth birthday, but it’s Aspire that is receiving the best gift of all: Steve’s dedicated service to our Melrose Park resale shop, Aspire on Broadway. Steve and his wife Mary became involved with Aspire more than 25 years ago when a friend of Mary’s encouraged her to come out and work at the store. They have worked in various capacities at the shop, from bringing in donations to pricing and organizing the store.
“Steve is a tremendous volunteer,” says Shevawn Weber, Manager of Aspire’s resale division. “He has the most positive outlook of anyone I know. He treats all of our staff and volunteers like family – with kindness, respect and a smile. He is a great man and we are thrilled to have him work with Aspire.” As parents of a disabled child, the Motykiewicz’s believe strongly in Aspire’s mission. Steve and Mary raised three children, one of whom was severely disabled and passed away 18 years ago at the age of 32. They understand the importance of a solid support system for families with a disabled child. Referring to the Aspire staff and volunteers, Steve says, “We’re like a family here.” Over the course of their involvement with the organization, Steve and Mary have certainly come to see the Aspire community as an extension of their own family.
Steve says that he will continue volunteering with Aspire until the end of his life, and he doesn’t intend for that to be anytime soon. Reflecting on his reasons for volunteering, Steve says, “I think it gives you better luck.” Steve certainly counts himself a lucky man, and Aspire is lucky to have him as a member of its family.
