Assistive Technology

Assistive technology describes items that help children with communication, cognitive, sensory, fine-motor or gross-motor challenges. Through this technology and accompanying therapy, children develop more functional skills so they can gain more independence, confidence at home and in school, and greater participation in activities in the community. Our therapists work with the child and family to assess the assistive technology that best addresses the child’s developmental challenges.

Assistive technology can range from:

  • Low-tech items such as pencil grips, loop scissors, hand splints, Velcro, puzzles with large knobs, switches to activate toys, picture cards or picture schedules.
  • Mid-tech items such as picture software, interactive stories and games, switches to activate the computer and devices that customize speech input and output for children. This also includes specialized chairs, wheelchairs and orthotodics.
  • High-tech items can include augmentative communication devices that allow children to expand on their communication to express thoughts, feelings and ideas with communication partners.

Augmentative communication devices are especially important for children who are non-verbal. Items such as picture cards, voice recorders and even the iPad provide the means to communicate, building a foundation for the future.

To schedule a consultation to determine if assistive technology would benefit your child, please contact Evon Mucek-Kucharczyk at 708.236.0979 x105. Evaluations will be billed to your insurance.
